1 Samuel 4:1-22

In this chapter, we are given the account of where judgement finally comes to the house of Eli as foretold by God. In chapter 2:30, God said, “...for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.” This truth is important for both leaders & families - the rebellion of Eli & his sons had a devastating consequences for both his family and his nation. Families and the fate of nations are intimately connected - the fragmenting of families will ultimately lead to the downfall of a nation. When our lives become more about us, and less about God, our families and ultimately our nation are in trouble. Thankfully the truths of 1 Samuel 2:6-10 & 2:30 are mixed with the mercy & grace of God, or else no one could stand. Yet the judgement upon Eli’s house and nation is a reminder of the devastating effects on those who do not honor God with their lives, and a reminder to never take God’s mercy & grace for granted.
