Now that Samuel has officially handed over the mantle of leadership to Saul, we begin to track with how Saul does with his new responsibility. Unfortunately, Saul’s reign goes from bad to worse in only three chapters (13-15), with God rejecting Saul as king at the end of chapter 15. In chapter 13, we see Saul’s first mistake - impatience leads him to do God’s work, but not in God’s way. What caused this? Pressure from the enemy, pressure from other people, a seeming void, along with fear & insecurity. But the end does not justify the means - we learn that God’s work must be done in God’s way.
