Now that Samuel has officially handed over the mantle of leadership to Saul, we continue tracking with how Saul does with his new responsibility. Unfortunately, Saul’s reign goes from bad to worse in only three chapters (13-15), with God rejecting Saul as king at the end of chapter 15. In chapter 13, Saul’s first mistake was doing God’s work, but not in God’s way. Whereas in chapter 14, we’re going to see Saul’s second mistake - independence leads Saul to pursue his own ideas instead of God’s ideas; his plans instead of God’s plans; his work instead of God’s work. We’ll see that man’s work doesn’t strengthen God’s people, but instead it weakens them. We’ll see that man’s ideas lead to foolish decisions, which can have devastating consequences within families & in the lives of those around them.
