David has experienced a prolonged season of opposition as Saul has attempted to kill him seven different times (chapters 18-20). In this chapter, David has clearly been worn down which has caused him to lose focus of God. Not only does David lie, we see him placing his trust in the physical over the spiritual, along with trying to find rest in the enemy’s camp! As we cross reference with Psalm 34 & 56, we see that God brings David to a place of humility, repentance, along with a renewed strength in Him. What’s great about God’s Word is that you won’t find any perfect superheroes apart from God Himself, yet God chooses to use imperfect people to accomplish His perfect will.
