Obadiah 1:1-21

Last Sunday, we began a series of studies through the Minor Prophets with a broad overview. As we will be studying through the Minor Prophets in chronological order, we will be starting with the book of Obadiah in this study.

Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament, only 21 verses in length, but it has a major message which is relevant for us today. Edom was known as one of the most secure nations in the world at that time because of the geographical landscape of where their nation was located. They were also a wealthy and diplomatic nation, which eventually resulted in one of the biggest blind-spots a person or nation can fall into - Pride. Their pride resulted in an independence from God, and an insensitivity towards others.

In the book of Obadiah, we see how God really feels about pride, the effect it has on people, and God’s specific intervention to take those who are “high”, and bring them “low”. Obadiah serves as a gracious warning about the results of pride, which forces us to look at our own attitudes and actions, knowing that God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
