So far in our study of 1 John, we have looked at the conditions of relationship with God (1 John 1:5-2:14), cautions to relationship with God (1 John 2:15-27), whereas this Sunday, we will are moving onto a 3rd section which we can refer to as characteristics of relationship with God (1 John 2:28-5:3).
What characteristics can we expect to see in the life of a believer is who truly walking in fellowship with God? The first characteristic that we’ll first be considering is purity of life. The life of a believer who is truly walking in fellowship with God will have a life marked with purity (1 John 2:28-29). Of course, a child of God will not be pure in a complete sense until they are face to face with Christ in heaven (1 John 3:1-2). But a believer who has this hope and who is abiding in relationship with Christ will also have a desire for purity (1 John 3:3). In the week ahead, read the passage and discuss with your family about the change that God brings about in a person when they become “born again” by the Spirit, and how this changes a person’s desire for purity & righteousness, instead of their desire for sin.
