Several weeks ago, we began a new book study of 1 John. The main theme of 1 John has to do with an incredibly vital topic that we often tend to overlook or neglect, and that’s our relationship with God. In the first section of this letter (1 John 1:1-2:14), the Apostle John has dealt with the conditions of our relationship with God - four essential aspects of having active fellowship with God are “walking in the light”, “walking in obedience”, “walking in love”, and “walking in spiritual growth”.
This week, John begins to deal with cautions in our relationship with God (1 John 2:15-17). In this week’s passage, the first caution to relationship that John identifies is “love of the world”. If our affections are drawn to “the world”, you can be sure that our affections will be drawn from God. In the week ahead, read through the passage and discuss with your family why the world has such a pull, and how a Christian can be drawn by the world. Also, discuss what effect it has on a Christian’s relationship with God when their affections are shared with the world.
