Last week, as we studied verses 1 Corinthians 15:12-34, we focused on the significance of Jesus’ resurrection and saw that our faith is futile if we deny that it took place. This week, as we study 1 Corinthians 15:35-58 of this chapter, we’re going to look at the nature of the resurrection of believers.
Firstly we'll see that we won't be going to heaven in our current bodies. In 1 Corinthians 15:35-38 Paul describes what happens when our current bodies die. Then he goes on to explain that there are bodies that are suitable for the earth and bodies that are suitable for heaven (1 Corinthians 15:39-44); he compares our current body to that of Adam and our future body to that of our resurrected Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:45-49). Next we'll see that not everybody will die before they go to heaven (1 Corinthians 15:50-52) and we'll rejoice with Paul in Christ's complete victory over sin and death (1 Corinthians 15:53-57). Lastly, in 1 Corinthians 15:58 we'll look at Paul's final application point: how our destiny of resurrection means we should stand fast for the Lord right now.
