Mark 7:24-30

Leading up to this week’s passage, we have seen that Jesus’ view of what is clean and unclean differs greatly from that of the Pharisees. Jewish tradition demanded outward cleanliness, as seen in the ritual washing of hands, cups, pots, and kettles. But Jesus was concerned with the cleanliness of one’s heart. In this week’s passage, Jesus takes a surprising trip to Tyre, a Gentile region, when he meets a Syro-Phoenecian woman who begs him to heal her demon-possessed daughter. Though the woman is considered an unclean “dog” by Jewish standards, she nevertheless shows her inner cleanliness by believing in the power of Jesus, the Jewish Messiah. Her faith is a model for all Gentiles who wish to receive crumbs from Jesus but who actually receive so much more.
