Hebrews 13:1-8

In this week’s study, we come to the final chapter of the book of Hebrews which is chapter 13. If we were to sum up chapter 13 in one word, it would have to be the word “exhortation”, which simply means “encouragement”.

In the first ten chapters, the writer to the Hebrews laid out a thorough foundation of who Jesus is, along with His sufficient sacrifice for us accomplished on the cross. In chapters 11-12, the encouragement has been to continue strong in Christ as we live by faith. Whereas in chapter 13, the writer exhorts us to what we can call “fruits of faith”.

An authentic faith in Christ will bring about real change in a person’s life - it is clear from the passage that there are certain attitudes and actions which are appropriate to encourage Christians to have present in their lives: brotherly love (Hebrews 13:1), hospitality (Hebrews 13:2), care and concern for those who are suffering for Christ (Hebrews 13:3), sexual purity (Hebrews 13:4), contentment (Hebrews 13:5-6), thinking rightly about spiritual leaders in the church (Hebrews 13:7).
